A Two-Night Nairobi Staycation: How to Spend 48 Hours in Karen

By Jungle Oasis · · 9 min read

It's remarkable how little distance a weekend needs. Change the view from your window, take away the usual errands, and two nights twenty-odd kilometres from home can feel like a proper holiday.

How can you spend a relaxing weekend in Karen, Nairobi? Keep it simple: arrive on Friday afternoon and spend the evening settling in; on Saturday, choose one or two outings — the Giraffe Centre, the Karen Blixen Museum or a forest walk — with a long lunch and an unhurried afternoon back at your accommodation; and on Sunday, enjoy a slow morning before checking out. Two nights is enough to feel away without the weekend turning into a schedule.

The itinerary below is built around that idea. It's deliberately light on sightseeing, because on a staycation the place you're staying is half the point. We run Jungle Oasis in Karen, so we use it as the example base — but the plan works from any accommodation in the area.

Why Karen Works for a Two-Night Staycation

Karen sits on Nairobi's south-western edge, and it feels distinct from the city's commercial districts: tree-lined roads, large residential plots, mature gardens and a noticeably slower pace. It's still very much part of Nairobi — there are supermarkets, cafés and restaurants close by — but mornings here tend to start with birdsong rather than traffic.

That combination is what makes it work for a short break. Several of Nairobi's best-known nature attractions are a short drive away, Nairobi National Park is roughly 20 minutes from Jungle Oasis, and there's enough green space around you that staying in feels like a choice rather than a compromise. Travel times from other parts of the city vary a great deal with traffic, so leave a buffer on Friday afternoon. For more on the area, see five reasons to stay in Karen.

Friday — Arrive, Settle In and Switch Off

Afternoon: check in and get your bearings

Aim to arrive around your accommodation's check-in time — at Jungle Oasis, check-in is after 2:00 PM. Use the first hour to unpack properly, find the kettle and wander the garden. Each Jungle Oasis unit is a private, self-catering space with its own kitchen or kitchenette, set within shared tropical gardens; the details — outdoor seating, fireplaces, hot tubs — differ from unit to unit.

Late afternoon: a first swim

Few things mark the start of a weekend as clearly as getting into the water. The heated swimming pool at Jungle Oasis is shared among guests staying at the property and is normally maintained at approximately 26–28°C. There are loungers beside it, the waterfall feature can be switched on if you ask, and the pool is maintained daily. Our heated pool guide has more detail.

Evening: dinner and a quiet night

Keep the first evening low-effort. You could cook something simple in your own kitchen, head out to a nearby Karen restaurant, or — if you've arranged it in advance — have a private chef prepare dinner. Meals and chef services aren't included in the accommodation rate; groceries can also be pre-stocked as an optional extra, so the fridge is ready when you arrive.

If you've booked Cottage Two or the Studio, each has its own private hot tub, and Friday night is a good time to try it. These belong to those units only; other units don't include one.

Saturday — Explore Karen Without Rushing

Morning: breakfast and a slow start

One of the advantages of a self-catering stay is that breakfast happens when you're ready for it, not when a dining room closes. Make coffee, eat outside if the morning is fine, and decide on the day's plan only once you've finished. Breakfast isn't included, so bring or pre-order what you'll need.

Late morning: choose one Karen experience

Pick one — or at most two — of these. Check current opening times and entry details with each attraction before you go.

Option A: The Giraffe Centre. Run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife, it lets visitors meet endangered Rothschild's giraffes at eye level from a raised platform. It's short, memorable and works for almost any age.

Option B: The Karen Blixen Museum. The farmhouse home of the Danish author of Out of Africa, now run by the National Museums of Kenya, gives a sense of the area's colonial-era history and has gardens looking towards the Ngong Hills.

Option C: The Oloolua Nature Trail. For something more active, the forest trail beside the Kenya Institute of Primate Research offers walking loops through indigenous forest with a waterfall and streams along the way. Conditions vary after rain, so wear suitable shoes.

Lunch: a long, relaxed meal

Karen has a good choice of garden restaurants and cafés, and a long lunch is one of the pleasures of a weekend here. Choose somewhere close to your morning outing to keep driving to a minimum, and book ahead on weekends. Menus and hours change, so check directly with the venue.

Afternoon: back to base

This is the part of the weekend most itineraries skip. Return to the property and do very little: swim, read in the garden, lie on a lounger, talk. Guests at Jungle Oasis also have access to a pickleball court in the gardens — a good way to spend an hour if anyone has energy left; ask your host about current availability.

Evening: make the most of staying in

After a day out, an evening in has its own appeal. Cook together, light the fire if your unit has an indoor fireplace (Cottage One and Cottage Two do), or sit by the shared outdoor firepit as the air cools. In Cottage Two, the private hot tub is normally maintained at approximately 37–40°C — warm water under a garden pergola as Karen goes quiet. The Studio's hot tub sits on its own private terrace.

Sunday — A Slow Morning Before Heading Home

Sunday doesn't need a plan. Have breakfast, take your coffee outside, and if there's time before check-out, a final swim. Pack without rushing — at Jungle Oasis, check-out is before 11:00 AM — and if you'd like to stretch the day, finish with a late brunch at a Karen café on your way home.

The point of a staycation is to go home rested, not to tick off one more attraction.

How to Adapt the Itinerary to Your Travel Style

For couples

Lean into the downtime: one outing on Saturday at most, a special dinner out or a chef at home, and a unit with a private hot tub if evenings outdoors matter to you. Our guide to romantic getaways in Nairobi has more ideas.

For families

The Giraffe Centre is the easy Saturday win with children. Keep meals flexible — self-catering helps — and plan plenty of pool time. There is no lifeguard, so children must be supervised by an adult around the pool and any hot tub. Our three-day Nairobi family itinerary has a slower-paced version for families.

For friends

Make the meals the event: a shared cook on Friday, a long group lunch on Saturday. Add a game of pickleball and an afternoon by the pool. Remember that the pool, court and gardens are shared with other guests unless exclusive use has been arranged.

Practical Tips for Planning a Nairobi Staycation

  • Book ahead — weekends and public holidays fill first.
  • Confirm your unit's amenities — hot tubs and fireplaces depend on the unit.
  • Check arrival and departure times, and plan your Friday drive around them.
  • Allow for traffic — Friday afternoons across Nairobi can be slow; any driving time is an estimate.
  • Verify opening hours for attractions and restaurants before you set out.
  • Pack swimwear and a warm layer — evenings in Karen can be cool.
  • Sort out meals in advance — groceries, restaurant bookings or a chef.
  • Leave time to do nothing — it's the part you'll remember.

Where to Stay for a Relaxed Weekend in Karen

Jungle Oasis Nairobi is a small group of self-catering units in tropical gardens in Karen: the Two-Bedroom Loft, Cottage One, Cottage Two and the Studio. Guests share the heated pool with its loungers and waterfall feature, the gardens, the pickleball court and an outdoor firepit. Private extras depend on the unit — Cottage Two and the Studio have their own hot tubs, and both cottages have indoor fireplaces.

You can compare the options on our Nairobi staycation page or see every unit on the accommodation page. If you're weighing up a hotel against a cottage, our guide to self-catering accommodation in Nairobi may help.

Sometimes Two Nights Are Enough

A good staycation balances a little exploration with a lot of rest. Two nights in Karen gives you time for both — a swim on Friday, one well-chosen outing on Saturday, and a Sunday morning with nowhere to be — without the travel day a longer trip demands. If this sounds like your kind of weekend, we'd be glad to host you.
